HVCaps High voltage capacitors

High voltage capacitors are electronic components designed to store and release electrical energy in circuits where high voltage levels are present. These capacitors are specifically engineered to handle higher voltage levels compared to standard capacitors, making them suitable for applications that require robust insulation and reliable performance under high voltage conditions.

Our very high voltage capacitors are typically used under oil for pulse shaping or peaking in large pulse power systems. The capacitors are manufactured using a large number of mixed-dialectric, foil electrode windings connected in series, arranged to grade the voltage linearly along the axis of the capacitor. Special attention is made to the materials used and their arrangement to avoid internal flashover. The capacitors are housed in plastic cases with axial terminals, and are thoroughly vacuum-dried and impregnated with an insulating liquid.

High Voltage Capacitors

  • Capacitance Range: High voltage capacitors are available in a wide range of capacitance values to suit different applications. While some high voltage capacitors may have relatively low capacitance values, others are designed for higher capacitance levels.
  • Voltage Rating: The voltage rating of high voltage capacitors indicates the maximum voltage that the capacitor can withstand without experiencing breakdown. This rating is a critical parameter to consider when selecting a capacitor for high voltage applications. High voltage capacitors typically have voltage ratings ranging from hundreds to thousands of volts.

  • Applications: High voltage capacitors find applications in various industries and technologies, including power electronics, telecommunications, medical devices, aerospace, automotive systems, and high-energy physics experiments. They are commonly used in power supplies, voltage multiplier circuits, pulse-forming networks, energy storage systems, and voltage regulation circuits.

  • Types: High voltage capacitors come in different types, including ceramic capacitors, film capacitors, electrolytic capacitors, and specialty capacitors like pulse capacitors and high voltage ceramic disc capacitors. Each type has unique characteristics and advantages suited to specific applications.

  • Safety Considerations: Due to the potentially hazardous nature of high voltage circuits, safety precautions must be observed when handling and working with high voltage capacitors. Proper insulation, grounding, and protective measures should be implemented to prevent electric shock and other safety hazards.
