Ericsson Microelectronics

Ericsson Ericsson Microelectronics is a global supplier of microelectronic devices including discrete semiconductors, integrated circuits, and sub-assemblies. Based in Stockholm, Sweden, Ericsson Microelectronics (MIC) supplies RF microelectronic components to its parent company for use in wireless applications, high-end power amplifiers and broadband communications.

Ericsson Microelectronics (formerly Ericsson Components) specialized in the RF Power Products area. Ericsson Microelectronics formed in 1990 to develop and produce power-related products. Ericsson Microelectronics focuses on the development of gold-metalized RF solutions including LDMOS RFIC, bipolar products and other RF power transistors. Ericsson offers semiconductor components, integrated circuits, and other electronic components used in its communication infrastructure products.

Ericsson is a Swedish multinational networking and telecommunications company. Historically, Ericsson has been a major player in the telecommunications industry, providing infrastructure, services, and solutions for communication networks. This includes the development of mobile communication technologies such as GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) and later contributions to 3G, 4G, and 5G standards. Over the years, Ericsson has played a crucial role in shaping the telecommunications industry and has been a key player in the development of mobile communication technologies

Marconi

Marconi Communications, the former telecommunications arm of the General Electric Company plc (GEC), was founded in August 1998 through the amalgamation of GEC Plessey Telecommunications (GPT) with other GEC subsidiaries: Marconi SpA, GEC Hong Kong, and ATC South Africa.

During the mid-1990s, its prominent predecessor company, GPT, gradually disappeared. Through a series of mergers, divisions and restructuring in 1997-1998, GPT was amalgamated with two major companies: Marconi Communications and Siemens Communications (in 2008, Siemens Enterprise Communications).

In December 1999, it became the principal subsidiary of Marconi plc, which was formed by the renaming of the entity left out of GEC, when GEC’s defence arm, Marconi Electronic Systems, was merged with British Aerospace to form BAE Systems.

GEC acquired FORE System on April 26, 1999, near the peak of the dot-com bubble. The US$4.5bn ($6.5 billion today) price tag for FORE Systems took a heavy toll on Marconi following the burst of the dot-com bubble in 2000/2001. In July 2001 Marconi plc suffered a 54% drop in its share price following suspension of trading of its shares, a profits warning and redundancies. Marconi plc was restructured to Marconi Corporation plc in May 2003.

On 23 January 2006, Ericsson acquired a majority of Marconi Communications’ parent company, Marconi Corporation plc. The remainder of Marconi Corporation plc was renamed Telent plc.

London: Infineon Technologies has confirmed it is buying the core business of Ericsson Microelectronics, Ericsson's internal semiconductor supplier, for approximately Euro 400 million. The all-share transaction is expected to be completed during summer 2002. Infineon's wireless activities have been focusing on the high volume business of semiconductors for mobile phones. The acquisition allows Infineon to expand its business in Bluetooth solutions and radio frequency (RF) components for mobile phones as well as mobile infrastructure. Ericsson has been one of the pioneers in developing components and modules for Bluetooth applications.
