: Founded in 1996, Northern Cables Inc. specializes in drawing and insulating wire and cable from nonferrous metals. Known as the Armoured Cable Specialists, Northern Cables brings 25 years of expertise to the electrical cable industry. Their initial product, Teck90—a low-voltage, armoured power cable for light commercial and industrial projects—quickly established them as one of the largest Canadian-made and Canadian-owned electrical cable manufacturers in the country.Northern Cables initially focused on manufacturing interlocked armoured cables, starting with Teck90. This waterproof and UV-resistant power cable is sold to major distributors across Canada. As Teck90 sales peaked domestically, the company expanded into the United States, securing a UL-listed license for Metal-Clad Cable. Initially marketed in the Northeast, the armoured cable line soon spread nationwide. In 1999, Northern introduced its third product line: AC90, a low-voltage cable for dry, interior applications.
Over the past five years, Northern has expanded the size range of its core products, offering armouring in steel and aluminum up to four inches in diameter, with the ability to produce colored jackets and composite constructions. This expansion and their strategic push into the U.S. market have allowed Northern to maintain stability despite seasonal market swings.
The company faced challenges with soaring raw material prices, notably copper, which significantly impacted their costs. However, Northern’s commitment to quality helped retain their customer base despite necessary price adjustments.
Northern Cables is a member of Electro-Federation Canada’s manufacturing group, the Electrical Equipment Manufacturers Association of Canada (EEMAC). This membership provides Northern with a voice in industry standards discussions. Northern relies on word-of-mouth and repeat business rather than extensive marketing campaigns, underscoring their reputation for quality and reliability.
In response to market demand, Northern plans to invest more in research and development, aiming to introduce new product lines in the coming years.
Northern Cables was founded by six former employees of Phillips Cables in Brockville, Ont., after that company closed in 1996. Starting with no product, facility, machinery, or market, the founders—Shelley Bacon, Richard Trapp, David Chartrand, Kevin Charlebois, Joe Brunner, and Todd Stafford—built the company from the ground up. Today, Northern Cables operates three manufacturing plants with a staff of 180, producing four million meters of armoured cable monthly for industrial and commercial markets across North America.
