COMPONENTS CORP DIGI-KLIP® DRP Series, Edge Connectors

The DIGI-KLIP® DRP series of dual readout, free-standing card edge connectors marks a significant advancement in packaging technology for the reliable mating of printed circuit boards. At the core of the DRP design is Components Corporation's proven wire form contact principle—a patented contact system successfully used in single readout formats since 1962.

Dual Readout, .200" Row Spacing for .062 PC Board

Contact Principle:

The principle is straightforward: to ensure long-term and reliable contact in demanding applications, a card edge contact must function as an effective spring. The connector must maintain consistent pressure over years of use and provide a "wiping action." The DRP series contact, an evolution of the patented single readout DIGI-KLIP, is made from the highest grade beryllium copper alloy wire, heat treated for optimal spring temper after forming. This design and process result in a contact that delivers a true wiping action point contact with exceptionally high unit force, creating a "gas tight" mating junction. This eliminates the need for precious metal plating in most applications and ensures consistent contact normal forces, regardless of time or multiple insertion/withdrawal cycles.

Design Flexibility:

The DRP series comes in disposable, molded carrier strips to facilitate mounting and positioning during soldering operations. Any combination of contact pairs can be applied in 0.100", 0.150", or 0.156" increments, with a popular 0.200" row spacing grid for all types. Contact pair deletions can be specified at no additional cost. The carrier strips are removed after soldering and can be discarded or returned for credit and reuse.

Space Savings: The DRP offers the lowest profile of any card edge connector system available today, with a total slot depth of just .260" and module board "fingers" as short as .130". The overall contact pair width is a mere .270" or .350" with the carrier in place.

Cost Savings: The DIGI-KLIP design, made from a wire form, virtually eliminates scrap material, reducing contact costs. Its unique "gas-tight" point contact removes the need for precious metal plating on both the connector and the circuit board tab. The versatile DRP carrier strip mounting system allows for an unlimited combination of contact pairs, enabling designers to specify only the exact number of terminations needed, avoiding unnecessary, unused termination positions.

Industry Compatibility: The DIGI-KLIP DRP series adheres to the popular .200" row spacing grid, ensuring compatibility with industry standards. This allows designers to utilize the DRP series' unique advantages without concern over sole sourcing, and many existing products can be easily redesigned to incorporate this superior contact system with minimal re-tooling.
