EMI / RFI Shielding Hardware

Both radio frequency interference (RFI) and electromagnetic interference (EMI) are generated by and affect electronic devices. The two terms are often used interchangeably because radio waves are a subset of the electromagnetic spectrum. However, it's important to note that EMI and RFI are not the same. EMI generally refers to short-range interference caused by high-frequency emissions from the device itself. In contrast, RFI refers to longer wavelength interference from external sources. Although they impact devices differently, EMI and RFI are common issues for electronics.
EMI-RFI Shielding

EMI/RFI shielding is designed to attenuate the energy of electromagnetic waves that pass through it. The primary purpose of this shielding is to enable electronic devices to achieve electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) so they can operate legally and efficiently. Additionally, EMI/RFI shielding is increasingly used to protect people from potential negative health effects of electromagnetic radiation. Regardless of the application, EMI/RFI shielding functions by acting as a conductor.

Our environment is filled with invisible signals traveling through the air and along conductive surfaces. As the number of electronic devices increases, so does the generation of these signals, leading to more frequent occurrences of EMI and RFI. These interferences can disrupt the function of electronic devices, making them malfunction or even rendering them useless. Fortunately, EMI/RFI shielding provides a solution.

In a world saturated with electronic devices, EMI and RFI pose significant concerns. At best, these interferences can cause minor malfunctions, disrupting signals and performance. At worst, they can damage sensitive electronic components, leading to complete failure.

EMI/RFI shielding materials create a barrier around electronics to prevent electromagnetic interference. These materials act as conductors, absorbing or reflecting EMI/RFI to protect the enclosed components. They shield circuits from electrical surges, prevent arcing, and serve as electrical and thermal barriers. When designed and implemented effectively, these materials function like a Faraday cage, attracting positive charges and redistributing electrons along the conductive surfaces.

When using EMI/RFI shielding materials in electronic applications, it is crucial to remember that these materials are conductive and can short out electrical circuits if they come into direct contact. Shielding paints for electronic enclosures are applied to the inner surfaces, while at the board level, insulative materials must be used between the shielding paints and circuits to prevent shorting. Conformal coatings are often suitable for this purpose.

Benefits

The EMI-RFI Shielding hardware reduces the possibility of electronic and radio interference by blocking unwanted electromagnetic waves or radiation from interfering with other circuits or devices Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) reduces electronic signal integrity and strength which can cause poor performance in sensitive communication systems and devices

  •  EMI-RFI Shielding Assemblies help ensure sensitive and confidential information is secure and contained when in shielded rooms or facilities
  •  May be used in specific Transient Electromagnetic Pulse Emanation (TEMPEST) standard applications dependent on project requirements which limits electric or electromagnetic radiation
  •  Each assembly is equipped with EMI-RFI seals, tape, conductive shielding materials and threshold

When shopping for the appropriate RFI or EMI shielding gasket, it is always beneficial to contact a professional gasket manufacturer. Professionals in the field of RFI and EMI shielding are the most edified on gaskets, and know which type of shield to pick for a certain application. By doing the correct research, and contacting a valued professional, you can protect your electronic component from RFI.

Shielding is an excellent option to ensure proper device functionality. EMI and RFI can severely impact electronic devices, sometimes causing them to fail completely. For more information on designing effective EMI and RFI shields, please do not hesitate to contact our talented team.
