Details

Board-to-board (BTB) connectors are used to accurately interconnect printed circuit boards (PCBs) in a stackable manner. They can accommodate various types of PCB orientations, relative distances, and space constraints to allow for design flexibility. The printed circuit board (PCB) has become a foundational staple in the electronics industry—yet given continuing trends toward miniaturization, designers now need a more diverse range of solutions for creating dependable PCB connections. In addition, multiple materials, plating finishes, and pitches are available to meet electrical and mechanical specifications. Depending on the purpose of the interconnect, connectors are further offered as high-speed, floating, or power. To achieve the desired performance, all the above should be considered when designing an interconnect system.

Board-to-Board Connector Types

  • Backplane - Two daughter cards connected through a common PCB in the back of a chassis form a backplane system. A Right-angle connector on each daughter card connect to the backplane with vertical connectors. Backplanes are typical in top-of-rack switch applications or HHD clusters.
  • Coplanar - Applications where the PCBs are on the same plane and connected by two right-angle connectors.
  • Orthogonal - Applications where the connecting PCBs are orthogonal to each other. This improves airflow and is useful in contemporary networking configurations which implement the spine and leaf structure.
  • Mezzanine - Two connected parallel printed circuit boards at fixed distance apart.
  • Signal - General purpose connectors. The signature of these connectors is the open pin field and are they are generally for low voltage-low current applications. An open pin field means each pin is its own connection and patterns of signals and ground can be determined by the end user. This makes these connectors applicable for the most applications, but they may not be suitable for high performance applications. Bergstak is unique in this group because it has the capability for high-speed signaling.
  • Card Edge - Only requires one connector, because the male connector is formed by plating pads on a PCB. Card edge PCBs can connect perpendicular to the mother board as in PCIe, or can connect in a coplanar configuration.

Pin Headers

Pin headers (male) and female headers (socket) are used as a set. A male pin header consists of one or more rows of metal pins molded into a plastic base. Due to their simplicity, male pin headers are the most cost-effective.

Board to board connectors are designed to connect printed circuit boards together without a cable. This connection can be permanent in the case of "hard soldering" (soldering a pin header to the PCB at both ends). This approach may be used in a "fit and forget" solution where no mating cycles are required.

Female Headers

Female headers are the sockets that male headers fit into. These connectors complete the design by allowing the PCBs to be easily connected and easily replaced should either of the headers become damaged.

Box Headers

Box header connectors are featured with a plastic shroud around the header. This helps guide the connectors during the mating process to avoid mating errors.

High-Speed Connectors

High-Speed Connectors are specifically designed with robust terminals and high-temperature resistance plastic to be used in industrial applications that require high-speed transmission. The unique contact structure allows it to maintain a steady impedance profile, which ultimately minimizes both the noise and signal loss over the connectivity, with a potential secure data transmission of up to 4Gbps.

Greenconn provides a wide variety of Board to Board connectors from 0.35mm of narrow-pitches, low profile, and space-saving types that are best suited to compact equipment such as smartphones, wearable devices, and such to the types featuring the floating structure absorbing vibrations and minor misalignment on a printed circuit board that are best suited to equipment such as automobiles and medical devices requiring high contact reliability.
