Ledtronics LEDs, Discrete, SMD Surface Mount

Ledtronics Surface Mount LEDs are smaller than leaded components, making them ideal for space-limited board sizes and equipment. They are highly resistant to shock and vibration and come in packages with significantly more pins than leaded LEDs. Their lightweight design makes Surface Mount LEDs perfect for mobile devices. They are also well-suited for RF applications due to their low levels of parasitic inductance and capacitance.

A crucial element of an LED display is the light-emitting diode (LED), a semiconductor light source that illuminates when electricity passes through it. A pixel, typically consisting of at least three diodes (red, green, and blue), is the smallest visual component of any digital image. The number and density of pixels determine the resolution of the display and significantly impact the visual quality of the content.

Discrete vs.SMD

Also known as a through-hole or dual in-line package (DIP), a discrete LED is a single conducting component mounted through a hole-punched printed circuit board (PCB) and soldered in place. The evolution of LED technology has resulted in the development of surface-mount device (SMD) packaging. Diodes in an SMD package are soldered to the PCB via six pins, providing a more physically stable connection than discrete diodes. A six-pin connection also allows for better diagnostics and control capability, as more data is able to flow through the pins. Additionally, SMD components are mounted closer to the circuit board and have better thermal control through conduction.

One significant advantage of SMD packaging is its ability to place pixels much closer together compared to discrete packaging. This allows for a tighter pixel pitch, resulting in higher resolution. Pixel pitch, the distance between the center of each pixel to the center of an adjacent pixel, is another critical factor in digital display quality.

Moreover, because the diodes are packaged together and emit light onto a flat surface, akin to a projector illuminating a screen, no diodes are obstructed by others when viewed from an angle. This enhances color consistency and widens viewing angles.
