Vitrohm Ceramic Encased Wirewound Resistors

Quick Overview

Vitrohm Ceramic Encased Wirewound Resistors

Ceramic-encased, flame-proof resistors serve a dual purpose as wirewound resistors and fuses, simplifying the design of circuits requiring built-in thermal protection. A wirewound resistor, a type of electrical passive component, regulates current flow. It comprises an insulated metallic wire wound around a non-conductive core. Typically made from high-resistivity materials like nickel-chromium (Nichrome) or the copper-nickel-manganese alloy Manganin, the wire is wound around core materials such as ceramic, plastic, or glass. Wirewound resistors, the oldest type still in production, offer precise manufacturing, excellent properties for low resistance values, and high power ratings.

Details

These Vitrohm resistors are ceramic housed low-inductive resistors with ceramic rod wirewound core and are almost universally used in the far east for almost all radio, TV and industrial equipment applications. Vitrohm Ceramic Encased Wirewound Resistors series enjoys the following distinct advantages over normal coated resistors:
1. As the resistive element is hermetically sealed in a ceramic case using a cement  which enjoys flame retardant properties even at high overload, no damage can be caused to neighbouring components.
2. Due to very high degree of insulation and low surface temperature, these resistors can be mounted with their bodies relatively closer to the PCB.
3. These resistors are also commonly referred to in the far east as cement resistors owing to the nature of their construction.
4. In certain markets, these resistors are also wrongly called fusible resistors.
Note:
Due to recent technological advances, the ceramic cases used may be steatite ceramic or corderite ceramic or high alumina ceramic depending on the nature of the application. Hence the ceramic cases may be off-white or variations of brown and variations of grey; colours which are inherent to these ceramic materials.

Vitrohm Resistor offers commercial grade ceramic case power wirewound and film resistors. For medium to high rated power (2W-60W), Vitrohm provides full electrical insulation mounted in a ceramic case. The ceramic construction is fireproof and resistant to moisture & solvents. The internal element is wirewound on lower values, power film on higher values. Vitrohm ceramic wirewound resistors feature ideal specifications for high volume and high-temperature applications. Frequently used in power supplies, motor controllers, and automotive applications, these products can be custom tailored to individual needs. With the extended resistance range and high-temperature rating, the resistors can be specified for operation in harsh.

A wirewound resistor is an electrical passive component that limits current flow on an electrical circuit.
As the name indicates, wirewound resistors consist of a resistive wire, with different alloys, wounded around an insulating substrate, to achieve the desired ohmic value, and can be finished with a protective coating, ceramic case or moulding.
For a wirewound to be used on the end application, the resistive wire has to be connected to the terminal leads.

The first and therefore the oldest resistor technology initially used only for precision and power applications, is nowadays used in several applications. The application requirements determines the selection of winding, contacting method and partly also the type of finishing. Wirewound resistors are distributed into some major categories according to their mains characteristics and application.
