Electro-Mechanical Toggle Switches

Toggle Switches have an operating lever that can be pushed up and down or left and right to switch an electrical circuit. A Toggle Switch is an electromechanical switch which uses a lever or baton as an actuator. A toggle switch is a switch that is manually activated by a lever or another mechanism. While the basic light switch is probably the best-known example, they can be utilized in almost any type of commercial vehicle application. Toggle switches are available in many sizes and configurations and offer a wide range of uses. They are popular for their ease of operation and generally offer 1-3 positions to open or close a circuit.

A Switch is an electrical switch is any device used to interrupt the flow of electrons in a circuit. Switches are essentially binary devices: they are either completely on (closed) or completely off (open). There are many different types of switches, and we will explore some of these types in this chapter. Toggle switches come in nylon or metal, and sealed or unsealed actuator styles, in addition to heavy duty toggle switch designs for when extra high amp rating is needed. The reversing switch is a DPDT control for motors and can be connected with back-up alarms. Sealed models with weather resistant plastic coating can be used for marine and heavy duty equipment applications.

Toggle Switches are categorized by their external size. Miniature and Subminiature Toggle Switches are mounted on panels for devices and equipment. Ultra Subminiature Toggle Switches are soldered directly onto PCBs. In addition to the external size, other product variations depend on the number of contacts, the ON/OFF states at the lever positions, momentary operation (i.e., whether or not the lever is self-resetting after the user removes their hand from the lever) and other characteristics.
