A transformer core is a structure composed of thin laminated sheets of ferrous metal, typically silicon steel, stacked together. The primary and secondary windings of the transformer are wrapped around this core. At the heart of a transformer, the core facilitates the flow of electricity through a primary winding, creating a magnetic flux. As this magnetic field intersects the secondary winding, the voltage is induced in the secondary winding. The power is stepped up or down based on the number of turns in each winding: more turns in the secondary winding result in increased voltage, while fewer turns result in decreased voltage.

The transformer core ensures efficient magnetic coupling between the windings, enabling effective transfer of electrical energy from the primary side to the secondary side. There are two main types of transformer cores: shell type and core type. In shell type cores, the core surrounds the winding, whereas in core type cores, the windings surround the core.

Different types of transformer cores include:

  • E, I Cores: Featuring simple bobbin winding and easy assembly, these cores are used in power, differential, and telecom inductors, as well as broadband, converter, and inverter transformers.
  • ETD Cores: With a center post designed for minimum winding resistance, these cores are optimized for power transformer efficiency and are ideal for power transformers and inductors.
  • EFD Cores: These cores have cross-sectional areas suitable for compact transformers and various inductor and transformer applications.
  • EER Cores: Featuring a round center post, these cores offer a shorter winding path length compared to square center posts.

An electric power transformer includes primary, secondary, and sometimes tertiary windings. Effective flux linkage between these windings is facilitated by a low reluctance magnetic path within the core, typically made from materials such as silicon steel or ferrites. For reliable ferrite core transformers, consider sourcing from Fair-rite, which offers a variety of ferrite cores to meet specific application requirements.
